A Miracle are those Little Things that Happen Every Day
-------------------------------------------------
Hayden's car drove up a gravel road and pasted a large field. The human society for Pinewood was at the top of the hill, filled with animals waited for homes. The small white building that looked like a house came into view. Barks pulsed through the car's windows. Hayden's foot hit the ground as she scooted out of the car. Re-adjusting her leather bag Hayden headed for the door. She pulled it open. A small room with a green rug, a wooden desk, an old black cat, and the smell of urine meet her. Someone bustled through a door in the back. A middle aged woman with sandy brown hair, green beaded necklace, small glasses, and teal clothes smiled warmly at Hayden as she said, "Are you here to adopt?". Hayden stood squarely in the door for a second before saying, "Yeah." The woman looked please as she clapped her hands and headed for the desk. She sat in a gray woolen chair and motioned for Hayden to take the hard red chair on the other side.
"Why are you getting a pet?" The woman asked as she hovered a ball-point pen over a clipboard. Hayden felt pressured but tried to stay calm. "My family already as a dog and a cat but I want a dog of my own." She said as she looked at the black cat licking itself in the corner. The woman nodded and continued to ask questions about Hayden's personality, where she lived, about her yard, her car, her past pets, and more.
Finally after 20 minutes of questions the woman stood up and asked the final question, "Now, would you like a puppy or an adult." Hayden followed the woman through the swinging door and into a room filled with cats before saying, "Doesn't matter" The pair took a sharp right and through another swinging door. This lead into a long room filled with cages. There weren't many lights and dogs yipped fiercely. "Just look around. No fingers in cages and don't feed them anything. Come get me if you see one you like." The woman said as she hurried back through the door.
Hayden's feet seemed to pound as the hit the ground. She passed so many cages, basset hounds, cattle dogs, beagles, papillons, labs, retrievers, bloodhounds, sheepdogs, chows, german shepherds, poodles, boarder collies, and mutts. A few cages away from the end was a cage filled with four bulldog puppies. She continued walking but her mind would wander back to the puppies.
Hayden finally walked back through the doors and asked the lady to see a dog. The woman brushed past Hayden and placed her hands on her hips. "Which one?" She said as she wiped sweat from her forehead. 'She must be working hard in that office', Hayden thought as she pointed to the cage with the puppies. The woman opened the cage and let the four puppies run free. Three of them ran to other cages but one ran up to Hayden.
"Hi" Hayden whispered as she rubbed her hands across the puppies back. "I'll take this one." Hayden said picking up the dog. The woman raised an eyebrow. "You don't have any info on the dog. You don' even know the gender!" She said with a huff. "Doesn't matter I like......" Hayden paused to feel under the pup. It squealed and tried to bite her as she finished, "her."
An hour later after the woman (whose name Hayden never got) had reminded her 100,000 times what to do and what not to do. Hayden left with a box of supplies and her new puppy, Teddi, in her hands.
