-- PERSONALITY
-- SINGLE DAD: Charlie is what most guys would consider a nightmare: a single dad... of three. Jamie is the oldest, the son of Charlie's deceased fiancee, Chuck is the middle, the son of Charlie's ex-girlfriend (we don't talk about her), and Melody is the youngest, his own daughter and half sister to Chuck. Everything in the song "Mr. Mom" is Charlie's life. He has no downtime, ever, at all. Raising a very grown-up 7 year old, a ridiculously high-energy 6 year old, and a daddy's girl 3 year old can really take its toll on a man, sometimes its a wonder Charlie hasn't been driven to drink more.
-- WORKAHOLIC: Providing for the three children mentioned above on a policeman's wage in a small town means that Charlie has to work long hours. After dropping kids off at school and daycare at 8 am he goes straight to work and usually works until 5 when the boys get out of football practice, then picks them and Melody up and takes them home, and often has to hire a babysitter because he has to run off to work another shift after the kids have gone to bed. He is a hard worker and a dedicated father, but sometimes, he really just needs a friend to smack him upside the head and remind him that he needs to take time off for his family just as much as he needs to work to support them.
-- CHARMER: Charlie has always naturally been a charmer (though his best friend and cohort, Sebastian) would tell you differently. There is just something about those blue eyes and tousled curly hair that seems to attract women... which is probably why he ended up with three kids, only one of which is actually of his own flesh and blood. He is definitely a bit of a gentleman (that's not to say he would never get it on with a woman if she wanted him to and she didn't look like a llama), and the ladies seem to love that about him too. He is a bit relationship shy at the time being, for obvious reasons, but who knows when that one special girl will come along to fix that problem?
-- LOVES: Jamie, Melody, Chuck, German Shepherds, draft cross horses, getting the bad guy, guns (specifically his own), his horse, whiskey after a long day, 65-70 degrees
-- HATES: Super hot days, super cold days, pugs, shopping, arabs, purebred thoroughbreds, holidays with his parents, mornings, paper work, answering 911 calls of old ladies who think there is a robber breaking into the house when it's her husband climbing through the window because he got locked out of the house.
-- HISTORY
Where do we start? Charlie was born and raised in Pinewood West Virginia. He went to school here, got into fights here, made his best friend here, quit the football team after a week here (because the whole point of the game was for a bunch of dudes in tight pants to beat each other into the ground for no reason other than to run around with a pig skin ball and pretend that they are significantly more intelligent and awesome than they really are), and grew up here. Charlie did four years of high school in two years, and much to his parents dismay, joined the police academy the day after he graduated. He moved to New York City for a while after completing the academy, but decided after a couple of years that he would much rather pull people over for speeding then risk getting shot while trying to push back a crowd of idiots protesting dairy cows... or something like that. Shortly after moving back to Pinewood, he met a girl, fell in love with the girl, had a child with the girl... then subsequently came to the conclusion that her drug addiction and alcoholism was not fixable and he was better off without her... and broke up with the girl... who then vanished off the face of the earth... leaving him with her son and their daughter. He kept working and a year later met another girl, fell madly in love with that girl, got engaged to that girl, discovered she had cancer, and had his heart broken all over again while he watched her slowly fade away until she died, leaving custody of her son to him. He was now a single dad of three children, one of which was very emotionally distressed but terrifyingly good at bottling it up, one of which had more energy than 12 jack russel terriers in a giant hamster ball, and one that wasn't even 2 years old.
He still works on the police force in Pinewood and is known by everyone in the town, not only as a policeman or that guy who always looks like he just ran a marathon, but also as someone who was very dependable and trustworthy. It takes a lot of work to be a likable cop, but he pulls it off... most of the time.
-- SAMPLE
Well... the peace and quiet hadn't lasted long. Under the strong advisory of everyone who knew him, Charlie was still working double shifts Monday through Thursday, but now working only the morning shift on Friday, the evening shift on Saturday, and was taking every Sunday off. He needed to provide for his family... but he also needed to be there for them, and he couldn't do that if he was constantly working. Plus he was on the verge of reaching the end of his fuse and just snapping under the pressure and stress of it all. Being a full time cop and a single dad of three was a lot harder than it sounded, and all things considered he had been handling it quite well... until now. Work was running him down so much he was finding it increasingly difficult to get up every day much less carry out day to day tasks on his job... and Chuck had started asking him more and more when his next day off was... even little Melody had taken up the habit of crying for half an hour every time he would leave. So they convinced him... he needed more time off to spend with his family.
He had gotten up early this morning, knowing that if he didn't it wouldn't be long before Chuck came flying into his room and started begging him to get up, and from that point on he would have no peace and quiet. He loved Chuck, don't get me wrong, but he was like the energizer bunny on 12 energy drinks... he just kept going and going and going at such a fast pace, Charlie was certain there was no one alive who could keep up with that kid all day long... except Brody... but Brody was like a kid in an adult body, so he didn't really count, and Brody was still in California. Anyway, Charlie got up at about 6:00, and got himself ready for the day, then headed down to the kitchen and made a pot of coffee, knowing he would need the caffeine to survive the morning.
About 8:00 Chuck got up, and very shortly after that Melody was crying in her room. So he got up and trudged up the stairs, knowing that the second he walked through that door he wasn't an "eligible bachelor" anymore... he was a dad. He knew all too well that if he didn't go get Jamie up, the older of the two boys would literally sleep forever. They were quite the opposite of each other. Chuck was the last one to go to sleep and the first up and never ran out of energy, but Jamie was always the first to bed and the last to get up and never had even close to as much energy as Chuck did....
