A Miracle are those Little Things that Happen Every Day
-------------------------------------------------
Hayden sighed as she pulled her 1966 Ford Mustang down the gravel covered driveway. A small red sign with white lettering read, "Welcome to Pinewood Stables". She smiled half-heartedly and looked up toward the stables. It was medium sized and kept in good maintenance. She pulled into a parking spot and pushed the gear to 'P' for park. She turned the key and pulled it from the series of jagged lines that made up the ignition. Hayden sighed again and ran her fingers through her messy hair. The last time she had been to the stable was almost a month ago. The day she dropped Rolex off was a mess, she basically got him settled and ran out. Hayden went once more before she told mom and dad about her feelings and they freaked. Besides making her move in with them she also wasn't allowed out, unless it was school.
Hayden didn't know anyone here and she'd been here almost a month and a half! She stuck her keys into her leather bag and pushed open the door to her deep purple car. It was covered in mud and dented at the back but she still loved the car. 'Best $3,000 bucks I ever spent', She thought as she walked to the black front door. It protested with a groan as she pulled it open. Hayden spotted a small girl with brown hair and bay jodhpurs standing behind a desk hunched over looking at a computer. She looked as if she was about to leave but had just gotten an email she had to reply too. "Hello, I'm Hayden Steele. A new boarder. I don't quite remember where to go." Hayden said. She hated being so clueless but had no choose. The girl glanced up through brown rimmed glasses. Her braces showed as she talked to Hayden, "Just down the hall." Without moving her eyes from her computer she motioned to a huge set of wooden double doors.
Hayden knew Rolex's stall was toward the end but she wasn't sure on which side. Hayden passed a small boxed in room that had trunks along the four walls. Two girls were standing inside rubbing lip gloss over there already over-glossed lips. She continued walking and pasted a palomino with his head stuck over the wooden door. It's golden name plate read, "Domestic Violence, Dom. Owned By: Tucker White". She didn't get to close but Hayden could tell he wanted her too.
Hayden suddenly saw a black head hanging over a wooden door. Rolex. She grinned as she jogged toward him. Hayden smiled and scratched his cheeks. He nickered softly but pulled his head from her grasp. She tried to act mad but of course she couldn't. His black forelock fell over his eyes and he blinked slowly. A flash of gold suddenly caught my eye. A name plate on one side of Rolex's stall. It read, "Rolex Kentucky Home, Rolex. Owned By: Hayden Steele." It glistened in the sun that poked through the windows. Hayden traced her name with her finger tips slowly as if touching the beauty would rub off on her.
The next challenge was tack. Hayden found her way back to the tack room with ease but finding her brown leather strapped tack trunk was harder. After 5 minutes of searching she saw it tucked away in the left corner. Hayden grabbed the black handle and hauled it down to Rolex's stall. She set it next to the door and below the hook that held Rolex's halter, lead line, and fly mask. She ignored the lead line and grabbed the halter. Hayden quickly slung it around Rolex's head and lead him out to the pair of cross ties right in front of his stall.
He wasn't too dirty because her board included grooming but she still wanted him to be sparking. The currycomb wasn't needed so Hayden grabbed the hard brush. With a few swipes she decided that it wasn't needed either and traded it for the soft brush. She took her time stroking it over his barrel, rump, legs, and neck. Unlike most horses Rolex kept his eyes open during grooming. Just incase Hayden nicked something she shouldn't have and he needed to turn around and give her a cut.
That hadn't happened for a while but Rolex never took chances. Hayden grabbed his lead line and a spare, tied them together then clipped each side to his halter. She unclipped the cross ties and let them fall. The small 'bang' of the metal against metal made Rolex's ears flick back. Hayden patted his neck and began to lead him from the stable.
They took a left turn half way down the aisle and headed out the side door. This lead to a dirt path that forked off to 5 different pastures. She picked the biggest one and headed for it. Once the pair had reached the fence line she spotted three horses grazing in the shade. It wasn't hot by any means but horses liked to be as cold as possible.
They headed back to the fork and took the second largest pasture. This one was open so she pulled open the gate, lead Rolex inside, then latched it behind them. Hayden walked over to the three plank wooden fence and hopped up onto the second plank. She grabbed a handful of mane and a few inches of the lead lines and pulled herself up onto Rolex's back.
Hayden sat gently on his back and scooted her butt around until she found a comfortable spot. She applied pressure with her calfs as she squeezed Rolex into a walk. He jolted forward, excited to have Hayden back on his back. She let him increase his speed to a trot but didn't post. He snorted asking for more rein. If she gave it to him he'd canter.....
Hayden gladly handed over the make-shift rein and Rolex took off at a canter. At first Hayden couldn't find the rhythm but after a few strides she sat with ease on his rocking back. Hayden realized she wasn't wearing a helmet when she felt her hair thump against her back. She ignored it and continued to bond with her best friend.
Hayden didn't know how long they'd been out there when she spotted a girl with short blonde hair. The girl sat on the fence with a smile on her face. "Hey" Hayden said has she pulled Rolex to a halt. Rolex tossed his head and tried to move forward. "Hey I'm Juliana. Your new right?" the girl said with another smile. Hayden nodded and looked Juliana over. She seemed like a prep but cute. Her eyes were sky blue and deep blue eyeshadow was applied to her top lids. "Can I ask you a question?" Juliana asked out of the blue. Hayden pursed out her lower lip a bit and thought it over. What the heck was she thinking about? She had nothing to lose. "Sure." Hayden said very laid back. A glisten hit Juliana's eye as she said, "Do you have a boyfriend?" Hayden didn't think about the question for a second just replied in the same laid back voice, "Nope".
She smiled even more and suddenly asked, "A girlfriend?" Again Hayden didn't give the question a though and responded in the same voice, "Nah". Juliana looked Hayden over then dropped the subject. "So what's your horse's name?" She said in and cheery voice. "Rolex" Hayden responded rolling the 'R'. "Hey wanna ride with me sometime? I lease a horse but it would still be fun." Juliana said as she hopped off the fence. "Sure I'd love too." Hayden said unusually friendly. She was acting weird. Hayden was usually so closed up but maybe she was relived she just got to be out of the house.
Hayden hoped off Rolex as Juliana left and lead him around the pasture a few times. Once he was cool she took him inside and slid off his tack. She lazily hung it up on the hook next to his stall and kissed his forehead. "Be back tomorrow bud" Hayden said as she walked away. She spotted Juliana in a dapple gray horse's stall and waved. Juliana waved back then went back to grooming the horse. Hayden left the stable and popped into her mustang. She pushed the key into the ignition and twisted it. The engine purred awake and Hayden pulled out of the parking lot. Leaving Pinewood Stable behind.
