HEIGHT & WEIGHT: 5'5”, 110 lbs
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Laurie is of slightly less than average height for her age, and a bit skinny. However, she doesn't have a problem with her body image, and she eats voraciously. She usually keeps herself well-groomed, but she always seems to look slightly disheveled. As if she's not quite “all there.” Her clothes are fairly normal; she usually wears jeans and a t-shirt. She doesn't dress like she comes from a family with money, but she has enough of a wardrobe to prove it. In particular, her collection of t-shirts is outstanding, and she has enough of a variety that she could wear a different shirt every day of the month. Lauren likes wearing converse tennies, and has recently become a fan of fleece scarves and mittens, something that she never really had to wear in California. A fairly plain-looking girl, Lauren has long, wavy brown hair and blue eyes that sometimes look green. Her lips are often chapped and her fingernails usually have half a coat of nail polish on them. Her parents say that she's not allowed to wear makeup, so she keeps her cosmetics in her backpack and does her makeup on the way to school. Or in between classes. Whenever she has time. She frequently has a slightly glossy look in her eyes, as if she's not paying attention to what's going on, and she mutters under her breath a lot.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Laurie is generally withdrawn and rather sullen. She ignore adults as much as she can, and this treatment occasionally extends to her peers. Anything that she says is hostile, sarcastic, or blatantly nonfactual. She doesn't like to listen to anyone with authority, and frequently does the opposite of what they tell her to. She also refuses to admit that everything is not peachy, though she was apprehended numerous times for destroying public property in her old hometown. Lauren, ever snarky and irate, hates to ask other people for help, and completely refuses to cooperate with the psychologist she's been referred to. However, she does have her good sides as well. It just takes some searching to find them. A master on the piano at age fifteen, she can hear a song just a couple of times and play it back from memory. She also has absolute pitch, which means she can hear any note on the piano and tell you which key you're pressing. It's a lot harder than it sounds! She's also a fan of mystery novels, from a young age she was reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. In junior high she moved on to Sherlock Holmes stories and books about the CIA. She loves solving mysteries like scavenger hunts; and she's a master at sudoku puzzles. Lauren has an amazing analytical mind and is incredibly smart. Just from listening to her dad's phone calls and reading his medical charts she can accurately diagnose patients and list the possible treatments. Her father thinks she'd make a great doctor someday, but Laurie isn't interested in following in his footsteps.

SHE'S ASKING A QUESTION HOW WILL I BE
WHEN THIS NEXT ONE EVENTUALLY LEAVES ME?
Samuel I. Taylor, MD, 48, Surgeon
Lana Taylor, 47, Housewife
SIBLINGS:
Cooper Taylor (deceased)
OTHER FAMILY:
PETS:
Jewel, 10, Calico
OVERALL HISTORY:
Lauren is the oldest child of Lana and Samuel Taylor, formerly of Southern California. Her parents were married a few years before she was born, but didn't try to have any kids because Lana had some health problems. Then they finally decided they were ready and Laurie was born on November 16, 1993 in Palo Alto, weighing in at eight pounds, nine ounces. Her dad was a doctor so of course he scrubbed up and got to be the first to hold his daughter. She was a pretty healthy baby and didn't cry too much, little Laurie gained weight quite nicely and for a while she was cute and pudgy. She grew out of it at about four and started getting taller but she was never really what you'd call skinny. Which of course she was a little kid and it was quite normal. When she was four, her parents had another kid, a little boy they named Cooper. At first the little girl wasn't quite sure what to think of the idea but Coop was so cute, how could she not love him? And he loved his older sister to pieces. He'd toddle around the house on those cute pudgy legs of his, calling, "Lawie! Lawie!" And she'd hoist him up onto the couch and read him a story.
California isn't exactly the best place to grow up, the ringleaders of the ninth circus made it hard for kids to get a real education, and the people on the street meant they were educated in different ways. But Laurie and Coop grew up in a pretty affluent neighborhood and they never saw a lot of it. Their parents were sure glad. Samuel made quite a bit of money for a doctor, so they had a nice house, three cars, and lots of toys for the kids. Laurie got to take piano lessons, and she was really good. The kids fought a lot as they grew older, both of them had feisty tempers and that meant that their wills would clash. Laurie was the more outgoing of the two and inevitably she was the one who would always get in trouble. "Lauren Maria Taylor, you get down here right this instant!" Younger siblings seemed to have it so good! She wished that she'd been the younger one so Cooper would get in trouble, or that she'd been an only child. But you have to be careful what you wish for...
In eighth grade Laurie started hanging out with some of the rougher kids in school. She had never been really popular, and most of them were older than she was--she felt so important! I'm the only junior higher he even talks to. But hanging out with the wrong crowd always has consequences, even if your parents don't find out what you've been up to. Laurie thought her shenanigans could cause no harm. After all she wasn't hurting anyone, it was her life and she could do what she wanted with it. Why should it matter to anyone else? Last summer Dr. and Mrs. Taylor went on vacation for a week. "Laurie, you're in charge," Lana said, kissing her daughter as she sailed out the door. What harm could they do in six days? Surely the kids wouldn't kill each other. The second night of their trip they received a phone call. "Mom, dad, you've got to come home now." Cooper was in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. They rushed home but it was too late. Their baby was gone. The couple tried to comfort Laurie but she was inconsolable. For some reason she thought it was her fault. They couldn't figure out why and she just wouldn't tell them. It split their family apart, not only did Laurie's parents have to deal with the loss of one child, but the other one wouldn't speak to them.
Samuel decided that maybe a move would give them some clearance. He was being offered a teaching position at the WVU Hospital and he decided to check out the offer. So he and his wife packed their bags and headed east. His daughter stayed with her grandparents till he decided whether the move was official or not. Dr Taylor decided to stay in West Virginia, but he ended up taking another job, in a small town called Pinewood. When he and Lana were settled in their new house, Laurie flew over to live with them again. Though their relations were chilly, Laurie eventually got settled in and since her problems didn't seem to be going away, her dad found an accredited Child Psychologist and Lauren started counseling. She was so mad at her father at first but her 'shrink' isn't as bad as she thought he would be. She's finally gotten up enough courage to start going to school, for a while she was taking courses on the internet because she didn't want to go through having to make all new friends. But maybe she won't, unstable as she appears to be. Are her issues really dealt with, or is she just hiding them? Guess we'll just wait to find out...

HOW CAN A MAN BE ALL THAT THEY SAY
WHEN ALL THAT I KNOW IS MEN RUNAWAY?
ROLEPLAY SAMPLE:
Swinging her legs in time to the music blaring through the amusement park, Lauren Taylor bit off a piece of her butterscotch-dipped cone, and then licked the vanilla ice cream that dribbled out. Her skater shoes thumped against the wall she was sitting on, accompanying the base drum pounding out the beat of some song she'd never heard. People rushed by, not paying any attention to her. They were all too absorbed in their own little worlds, in finding that elusive pocket of enjoyment before the park closed its doors. Laurie preferred it that way. She would rather be invisible, it made life rather more interesting. Because when no one paid attention to you, you could get away with almost anything. And believe me, Laurie had tried it. In fact, sometimes she followed people just for the fun of it. Just to see if they would notice. And she thought she was better at it than the bad guys on television. No one seemed to notice a single, blonde-haired girl wearing a Disneyland t-shirt. She was just a part of the crowd. If they saw her more than once, hey, she had a right to be anywhere she wanted, right? That is, if they even remembered seeing her before. Sometimes Laurie thought she had the superpower of invisibility. And there were other times that she wished she did. Like when she fought with her dad.
There were lots of times when Laurie just wished she could click her heels together and make it all go away, that suddenly things would go back to normal, back to California, back to when Cooper was still alive. Although it had seemed his life goal to drive her crazy, Lauren really missed her little brother. Losing him had really torn her family apart, because they hadn't been that strong to begin with. Now she fought with her dad all the time, barely spoke to her mother, and she was pretty sure that her parents' relationship was on the rocks too. Her mother was actually happy to hear when her father wouldn't make it home before bed. Laurie was pretty sure that Cooper's death had just been the catalyst that caused a spark, but the dynamite had been there a long time ago. In fact, she couldn't remember the last time she'd seen her parents laughing together. As for her, when she wasn't in her room sulking with the cat, well she was out here stalking people. And what kind of a way was that to live your life? Since moving to Hawaii, Laurie had been constantly miserable, which was a funny thing for paradise. She missed her friends in Cali. She missed her dad's old job. She missed their old house. She missed having her grandparents within driving distance. Maybe most of all, she missed the sense of this is the way life is supposed to be.
She watched a man walking past, not really sure what attracted her attention to him, but at the same time knowing that something was out of place. It gave her a funny feeling in her gut. He was a typical forty-something man, balding, pale, slightly overweight, with faint stubble on his cheeks. He was wearing a jacket. Not common in the warm tropical evening. Laurie's hyperactive imagination combined with too many hours of NCIS suggested that it could be to conceal a weapon. Or, she thought, he could just be a businessman who hadn't had time to go home and change. The jacket was mussed, though, almost like he'd slept in it. He was walking a little bit faster than the rest of the crowd, as if he was trying to go somewhere in a hurry. His hands were in his pockets, which was something people did when they didn't want to be noticed. All this she took in without thinking. Lauren liked to think that she was good at being observant. She'd certainly had plenty of time to practice. However, there were always things that she missed. Until the man walked away, Laurie didn't realized just what it had been that was wrong. There was no smile on the man's face. In fact, he looked scared. Curiously glancing in the direction he'd disappeared, Lauren thought about it twice to be sure that she'd been right. Then she hopped off the wall. Time to do a little sleuthing.
